Description

The Safe-Life Signal is a 4G lone worker alarm with GPS, an SOS duress button and man-down fall detection, built for staff who work alone, after hours or away from the rest of the team.

Hold the SOS button for 3 seconds, or have a hard fall, and it texts your nominated contacts a Google Maps link, then calls them in turn until someone answers, with hands-free two-way voice through the device. It works anywhere in Australia with Optus or Telstra 4G coverage, typically lasts 4 days per charge and weighs just 43 g.

For occupational health and safety use, so GST applies. Buying for personal medical use? See the Signal medical alert pendant, which is GST-free.

What is the Signal lone worker alarm?

The Signal is a personal duress alarm for lone workers. It has its own SIM card and GPS, so it doesn’t rely on the worker’s phone, an app or Wi-Fi. It’s worn on a breakaway lanyard or carried in a pocket, and it’s ready to raise an alarm the moment it’s needed: in a client’s home, on a patrol, in a paddock or in a car park after close.

It replaces our previous 4G Lone Worker Alarm. The Signal is about 20% lighter, runs longer between charges (typically 4 days, compared with 2 to 3) and adds GLONASS satellite positioning for faster, more reliable location fixes. Unlike many lone worker services, there’s no lock-in contract: you buy the device outright and choose how it’s monitored.

How does the lone worker alarm work?

  1. Alarm raised: the worker holds the SOS button for 3 seconds, or the device detects a hard fall (man down). A voice prompt confirms the alarm, and a single press of SOS cancels a false alarm.
  2. Instant SMS alert: every nominated contact gets a text with the alarm type, battery level and a Google Maps link to the worker’s location.
  3. Calls in turn: the device calls contacts one after another, up to 10, with a 10 second gap between calls, until someone answers. Contacts can be a supervisor, a team leader, a colleague or a 24/7 monitoring centre.
  4. Hands-free two-way voice: the responder talks with the worker through the device’s loudspeaker and can judge the situation straight away.
  5. Location on demand: supervisors can text the device at any time for its current location, or be alerted when it leaves a set geofence.

Try it yourself: hold the SOS button, simulate a fall and hear the real voice prompts in the interactive demo.

Key features for lone worker safety

Feature Description
SOS duress button Large, easy-to-find button. A 3 second hold prevents accidental alarms; one press cancels.
Man-down fall detection Raises an alarm automatically after a hard fall, for when the worker can’t press the button.
Discreet mode Voice prompts can be switched off with a double-click of the side key, for situations where an audible alert could escalate things.
4G two-way voice Hands-free speakerphone on Telstra 4G. Incoming calls from supervisors can be answered automatically.
Up to 10 contacts Called one after another until someone answers, with SMS alerts to all.
Accurate GPS location GPS + GLONASS outdoors, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth assisted indoors, sent with every alarm.
Geofence alerts SMS alert if the device leaves a set work area or route.
No-movement alarm and check-in timer Alerts contacts if there’s no movement for a set time, or a timed check-in is missed. [[CONFIRM: in EV-12 firmware]]
Quick-dial call key Hold the side key for 3 seconds to call a supervisor or the office, without raising an alarm.
4-day typical battery Typically 4 days per charge (2 to 6 depending on use), so one charge covers several shifts. Low battery alerts by voice and SMS.

Helping you meet your duty of care

Employers must manage the risks of remote or isolated work, including having a way for workers to call for help and get assistance quickly. Under the model WHS Regulations this is set out in regulation 48 (remote or isolated work), and in Victoria it falls under the general duties of the OHS Act 2004.

The Signal gives each worker a dedicated way to raise an alarm with their location, without needing a phone in hand. It works best as part of a lone working procedure that sets out who responds, how quickly and what happens next. A device on its own doesn’t make a workplace compliant, so include it in your risk assessment and review it with your team.

Monitoring options

Option How it works Ongoing cost
Self-monitored Alarms go straight to your nominated supervisors and colleagues by SMS and phone call. SIM plan only
24/7 professional monitoring Alarms go to a monitoring centre (delivered through Securitas), which speaks with the worker, escalates to your contacts and calls 000 if needed. Monitoring fee, billed quarterly by direct debit or annually by invoice

Frequently asked questions

Q: What is a lone worker alarm?
A: A small wearable device that lets someone working alone call for help quickly, usually with a panic (SOS) button, location tracking and automatic alerts such as man-down fall detection. The Signal has its own 4G connection and GPS, so it doesn’t depend on the worker’s phone.

Q: Is there a lock-in contract or monthly fee?
A: No lock-in contract. You buy the device outright, and the included SIM is billed yearly ($66 renewal after the first 365 days). If you add 24/7 professional monitoring, that’s a separate ongoing fee, billed quarterly by direct debit or annually by invoice.

Q: What does “man down” mean?
A: Man-down detection raises an alarm automatically when the device senses a hard fall, so help is called even if the worker is injured or unconscious. It catches most hard falls but not every incident, such as a slow slump, so workers should always press SOS if they can.

Q: Can the alarm be raised discreetly?
A: Yes. The voice prompts can be switched off with a double-click of the side key, so the device doesn’t announce the alarm out loud in a tense situation. The SMS alerts still go out, and the call to contacts still connects on the loudspeaker.

Q: Who receives the alarm?
A: Up to 10 contacts that you choose, such as supervisors, team leaders or colleagues, or a 24/7 monitoring centre if you add professional monitoring. Everyone gets a text with the worker’s location, and the device calls them in order until someone answers.

Q: Does it work in remote areas?
A: It works anywhere with Telstra 4G coverage, which reaches much of regional Australia. It isn’t a satellite device, so it won’t raise an alarm where there’s no mobile coverage. Check coverage for your work areas before rolling it out.

Q: Can we track where our workers are?
A: Location is sent with every alarm, and an authorised contact can text the device for its current location or set up geofence alerts. Let staff know how and when location is used, as part of your lone working procedure.

Q: Why does GST apply?
A: This version is sold for occupational health and safety use, so GST applies and it can be claimed as a business expense. The same device sold for personal medical use is GST-free: see the Signal medical alert pendant.

Q: Can we use our own SIM cards?
A: Yes. Choose the “No SIM” option and use any 4G SIM on the Telstra network, such as your existing business mobile plan.

Q: Do you supply teams and organisations?
A: Yes. We supply councils, care providers, security firms and businesses. For 10 or more devices, contact us about volume pricing, pre-programming with your escalation list, and a trial.
